Проблема перекладу соціокультурних лакун належить до ключових у сучасному перекладознавстві, оскільки саме в цих одиницях найяскравіше відображається культурна специфіка мови, історичний досвід і національна ментальність носіїв. Термін «лакуна» (від лат. Lacuna – «порожнеча», «прогалина») позначає відсутність у мові перекладу еквівалентної одиниці, що передає певне поняття, властиве культурі мовиджерела.
